GHOST 2099

Ghost 2099 is a futuristic Marvel Comics series set in the year 2099, where technology, megacorps, corruption, and chaos reign supreme (basically Cyberpunk 101). The story follows the charismatic character of Zero Cochrane, an anarchic data-surfer who is granted the power to kick back society by the mysterious Ghostworks, basically a council of pop-culture obsessed AIs. Ghost 2099 combines elements of mystery, action, and social commentary, offering a darker, dystopian take on the superhero genre. The serie, originally started by Len Kaminski, Chris Bachalo and Mark Buckingham holds a special place in my heart. Let’s just say this is one of my all-time favorite iterations of the character.

As a die-hard Ghost Rider fan and a cyberpunk geek I was stoked when I stumbled upon the first pulp issue of Ghost 2099 in a dusty old comic book shop. That left me with the hunger for more numbers and kicked off a full-on treasure hunt for the rest of the series, which wasn’t easy—those issues were only printed once in the ’90s in Italy and were tough to track down. But hey, the hunt was worth it, and I came out victorious!

I couldn’t resist diving into some CG asset work, like the Velociraptor bike that Ghost hurls at fascist Pusbags. What started as a fun little CG kitbash (mostly using assets from the legendary Ian Hubert) quickly evolved into a full-fledged CG character with AA rigging and FX simulations. I would like to give proper credit to Idmenthal for making hiss awesome Cyberpunk skull design (the one I put on the back of the vest) available to use.

I felt the need to bring those panels and strip to life in 3D, and wow, it turned out to be an incredibly fun and satisfying experience!

As for my Cthulhu project (you can find here) I basically started visual development for a fan non-profit movie that won’t go anywhere soon.
The entire run of the comic remains one of my favorites, and I truly believe it would make an incredible big-screen adaptation. Let’s hope the megacorp that owns the character’s IP sees the potential. Golly, I’m not sure if that’s twisted or just how things go..

In the meantime I would like to thank Len Kaminski and Mark Buckingham for their work on this unacknowledge-as-it-should story, cause was really inspiring to me. Let’s hope I will turn it into a fan-made no-profit mock-up concept trailer before Marvel Studios and Disney bury me in a gargantuan legal just for wanting to pay homage to a character I love. After all, don’t forget Transverse City rule numero uno: Drive defensively.
